CASE FILE 002 — THE BELL WITCH (1817–1821)
Beginning around 1817, the family of John Bell in Adams, Tennessee, reportedly experienced a series of strange disturbances on their farm, including unexplained knocking and scratching sounds, disembodied voices, and alleged physical attacks. The mysterious presence eventually became known as the Bell Witch and was said to particularly torment John Bell and his daughter Betsy. According to the legend, the entity could speak to witnesses and even claimed responsibility for John Bell’s death in 1820. The story was passed down for decades before its most influential written account appeared in 1894, leaving historians to debate how much of the famous haunting reflects actual events and how much developed through folklore. Today, the Bell Witch remains one of America’s best-known supernatural legends.
